If there were two major things missing from TRON: Legacy that I would ask to be remedied in a third installment they would have to be: MORE DAFT PUNK and oh, I don't know, a DECENT STORY. Yeah, Daft Punk technically did the whole score, but there needed to be more music in their signature vein. And yes, there was a semblance of a story, but it was pretty shallow. I could complain about Jeff Bridges' cheesy zen line or the fact that Garrett Hedlund is perfectly poised to replace Hayden Christiansen as the most dashingly handsome cardboard actor in Hollywood, but I won't because at least those guys were entertaining. Anyway, if you saw the end of Legacy (no spoilers here -- not that it would really matter), you know that they left us poised for another installment and if you ask directorJoseph Kosinski, he'll tell you there is a story for a part two in the works. An actual story with depth and emotion? Well, only time will tell, but let's not get our hopes up.
Of course, despite the huge success Legacy saw at the box office -- $400 million -- we're not sure if we'll ever see this third TRON story or if it's just Kosinski's pipe dream. There's no official word from Disney about if they'd ever be on board for a TRON 3 and it's not like he's sitting at home concocting the story right now. It's all just a little blue glint in his eye at the moment. Here's what he had to say to HitFix on the matter, "I think that we are working on the story now. If we can come up with the right story and a good reason to return, than absolutely. I'd love to go back. But, it probably won't be the next thing I do."
So there you have it. It's a possibility, just don't start marking up your calendar in anticipation. It will probably be a few years before we ever see another TRON, if we see another one.
