Rahman loses out at Oscars, Indians disappointed

India’s celebrated composer A.R. Rahman bagged two Oscar nominations in the original score and original song categories for his work in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours”, but failed to repeat the success story of 2009 and lost out on both the awards at the 83rd Academy Awards here Sunday night.
Rahman lost the Oscar for best original score to composer duo Trent Rezmor and Atticus Ross who won it for “The Social Network”; the best original song award went to Randy Newman, who won it for “We Belong Together” in “Toy Story 3″.
The composer, popularly known as the Mozart of Madras, also performed at the mega event, being telecast live across the world.
India-born film editor Tariq Anwar, nominated for the Oscar in the best editing category for “The King’s Speech”, couldn’t get the coveted statuette either. He lost out to Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter who won it for “The Social Network”.
“The King’s Speech” walked away will the top honours – best film, best actor for Colin Firth, best director for Tom Hooper and best screenwriter David Seidler.
In 2009, Rahman brought home two golden statuettes for best score and best song in “Slumdog Millionaire”. He was the first Indian to bag two Oscars.
Back home in India, where the awards ceremony was telecast early Monday morning, many woke up, hoping to see Rahman get at least one Oscar.
“At least he should have got one. This is very disappointing,” said Sumit Gupta, a New Delhi-based engineer.

Abhishek, Aishwarya, Mallika dazzle on Oscar red carpet

Bollywood star couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, along with Mallika Sherawat, dazzled in their finery at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards red carpet here.

Abhishek and Aishwarya got a chance invite to the prestigious event, where Hollywood’s Who’s Who gathers to celebrate international cinema. The duo was holidaying in Los Angeles and were not at all prepared to attend such a high-profile event at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood Sunday night.

However, last minute help from their designer friends helped them put their best foot forward at the red carpet.

Aishwarya sparkled in an off-shoulder Armani Prive bronze gown and kept her look minimalistic with just a pair of dangling earrings and hair on one side of the shoulder. Abhishek looked dapper in a traditional, formal black tuxedo.

Mallika, one of the most talked about Bollywood glamour girls, flaunted a sequinned white gown, with a daring front slit and a plunging neckline – just as she likes it always!

Among other Indians at the Oscars this year were composer A.R. Rahman, who was nominated in two categories – best original score and best original song – for his work in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours”. However, he lost out on both the titles.

Nevertheless, Rahman wore a charcoal Corneliani suit and a blue tie to the red carpet, and took a proud walk with his wife Saira Banu, who chose a beige Indo-western ensemble with a golden Judith Lieber clutch.

2011 Oscar: James Franco in Drag, Anne Hathaway in Tux

His performance of Cher's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" may have been scrapped from the rundown, but James Franco managed to channel his inner drag at the Oscars. The host previously was scheduled to sing the "Burlesque" theme but since the movie was not nominated and Franco's voice reportedly was "too horrible", it was scrapped.

Franco, who is no stranger to doing drag, appeared on the stage of 2011 Academy Awards wearing an unflattering pink gown and Marilyn Monroe-style wig. His partner, Anne Hathaway meanwhile took the duty as the man by wearing a tux. They gave what was called "performance comedy" in between the prize-giving.

Hathaway sang to Hugh Jackman who hosted the Oscars in 2009 and was seated on the front row on purpose. She complained how Jackman had ditched her to sing "On My Own" with her when it's her time to host. "He stuck his fake retractable claws into my heart when he left me on my own," one of the lines said in reference to Jackman's role as Wolverine.

Franco meanwhile cracked the expected Charlie Sheen joke, claiming "Weird part is, I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen." The "Two and a Half Men" actor has been making headlines in the days leading to the Oscars with his rants about the TV show's creator Chuck Lorre and his partying ways with prostitutes.

According to previous reports, Franco and Hathaway would go through five costume changes during the entire event.

2011 Oscar: 'The Fighter', 'Inception' & 'Alice in Wonderland' Add More Kudos

Christian Bale has shared a glorious moment at the 2011 Academy Awards with his "The Fighter" co-star Melissa Leo. After Leo nabbed best supporting actress kudo, "The Dark Knight" star gets best supporting actor title for his role in the sports drama.

"Melissa, I'm not going to drop the f bomb like she did. I've dropped plenty before," he says, referring to Leo's foul-mouthed acceptance speech. "To my little girl, who's taught me much more than I'll ever be able to teach her," Bale continues his speech, also giving a shout out to the real Dicky Eklund whom he portrays in the film.

"Inception", "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Social Network" are other films which have collected multiple prizes at the currently ongoing event. The sci-fi wins for Achievement in Sound Mixing as well as Achievement in Sound Mixing categories, after getting best cinematography kudo earlier that night.

"Alice" is named film with best costume design, thanks to Colleen Atwood who also designed the 1880's-inspired dress worn by Helena Bonham Carter at the ceremony. The 3-D adventure film from Tim Burton has previously taken home the art direction prize.

"Social Network", meanwhile, gets its second Oscar from original score category. Seemingly surprised with the win, Trent Reznor, who shared the honor with Atticus Ross, exclaims, "Wow. This is really happening," during his speech.

The 83rd Oscars has also handed out an award for Achievement in Makeup which goes to Rick Baker and Dave Elsey for their work in "The Wolfman". It is the first win for the horror thriller that night.

2011 Oscar: 'Social Network' Wins Best Editing, 'Inception' Wins Best Visual Effects

The 83rd Oscars is still taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, unveiling another win for "The Social Network" and "Inception". The drama about Facebook creation nabs Best Film Editing prize for Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter's work, while the sci-fi is hauled for its Achievement in Visual Effects (Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley and Peter Bebb).

The best editing trophy becomes the third award collected by "Social Network", and the visual effects prize marks the fourth time "Inception" is mentioned as a winner that night. "Toy Story 3" has also followed their footsteps to be a multiple winner, snatching best original song gong for Randy Newman's "We Belong Together".

Earlier at the ceremony, Oprah Winfrey has presented the award for Best Documentary Feature which goes to "Inside Job". Additionally, Best Documentary Short Subject and Short Live Action Film titles are given to "Strangers No More" and "God of Love" respectively.

Natalie Portman is officially the best actress in 2010. After hauled in various award events throughout the year for her role in "Black Swan", the Academy Awards recognizes her great acting with Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role trophy.

The currently pregnant star thanks "everyone who's ever hired me" for her win, and calls director Darren Aronofsky "a fearless leader." She wins the kudo after being nominated in the category along with Annette Bening ("The Kids Are All Right"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone"), Nicole Kidman ("Rabbit Hole") and Michelle Williams ("Blue Valentine")

Aronofsky, unfortunately, loses best director title to "The King's Speech" helmer Tom Hooper. The England-born filmmaker additionally edges out David O. Russell ("The Fighter"), David Fincher ("The Social Network") as well as Joel and Ethan Coen ("True Grit") for the prize.

"Thank you to all the members of the Academy. This is an extraordinary honor," Hooper states on his acceptance speech. "The morale of the story is listen to your mother." He also gives credits to the movie's actors Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush.

Daniel Day-Lewis Also Mentioned for General Zod in 'Superman'

Victoria Beckham Apologizes for Taking Disabled Parking Slot

Victoria Adams has been forced to apologize to a severely ill woman after the star's driver occupied the last remaining disabled parking space at a toy store in Essex, England. The pop star-turned-fashion designer visited the Toys R Us retailer last Sunday, February 20 in Harlow, Essex with her sister Louise to pick up balloons for her son Cruz's birthday party.

Her chauffeur stopped her black Jaguar right outside the store, using a parking spot allocated for disabled users only. Chantelle Hughes, who suffers from gentic disease Cystic Fibrosis, waited for the car to move out of the space so she could point out the error to the driver - but was shocked when she saw the famous star.

She tells Britain's Mail on Sunday, "Victoria Beckham needs to realize that disabled people could have parked there. She needs to think about it next time."

Beckham has now apologized for her driver's actions through her spokesperson, who says, "This was a momentary lapse in judgment by Victoria's driver, not something that Victoria was aware of or would ever condone. "Victoria is of course, hugely apologetic for any inconvenience that may have been

Honored by Harvard, Shakira Asks for Help in Education

Colombian superstar Shakira turned the spotlight on education in developing countries on Saturday, February 26 as she was honored at Harvard University. The "Hips Don't Lie" hitmaker, a former history student at the University of California, Los Angeles, was named Harvard Foundation's 2011 Artist of the Year in recognition of her career achievements and humanitarian work, following in the footsteps of previous winners Will Smith, Sharon Stone and Jackie Chan.

Joking about the accolade, the 34 year old told the crowd at the Massachusetts ceremony, "As I entered the premises today, I had to call my mum and say, 'Hey mum. Guess what? I got into Harvard!'" But Shakira's acceptance speech then took a serious turn as she called on students at the prestigious school to do more to help improve education for poor kids around the world.

She said, "Not everyone can study at Harvard University. But everyone, wherever they live, whatever their background, deserves a chance to make the most of his or her potential. And as a child of the developing world, it is my duty to use this voice in every way I can to promote the message about the power of education to change lives."

Shakira, a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, has been working to improve education and nutrition to kids from impoverished areas of her native Colombia since establishing the Barefoot Foundation when she was 18.

2011 Oscar 'In Memoriam': Celine Dion Sings 'Smile', Corey Haim & Betty Garrett Snubbed

Celine Dion made an emotionally rousing performance at the 83rd Academy Awards when singing "Smile" during "In Memoriam" segment. Delivering the song live on the stage at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, the mother of three looked graceful in a strapless dress.

During Dion's rendition of the classic song, a giant screen behind her showed montage of talented individuals who passed away in 2010. Mr. Magoo depicter Leslie Nielsen, "Titanic" star Gloria Stuart, actor Tony Curtis, film editor Sally Menke and many others were recognized in the special segment, but Corey Haim and Betty Garrett were not seen in the montage.

For "The Lost Boys" star Haim, this was the second time he got snubbed at movie prize-giving event. He was previously not included in the "In Memoriam" section of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January.

His former co-star Corey Feldman once commented on the snub at SAG, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "We have become used to not being honored by our peers in the industry." But he hoped that Haim would be recognized at Oscars, saying "I have faith that the Academy will make a wiser choice."

There has been no word from Haim's nor Oscar's camp regarding this. A representative from SAG previously explained Haim's absence from the reel was unintentional, and was due to a circumstance of time.

According to Britain's News of the World, he handed the stunner a red rose before getting down on bended knee to ask for her hand in marriage. A family
friend tells the newspaper, "We are very happy for them."

Shayk, who recently landed the honor of gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated's 2011 Swimsuit Issue, met Ronaldo last year after modeling together for the Armani Exchange campaigns. The friend said Ronaldo's mum Dolores wants the couple to marry in the footballer's home town of Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira. "She wants a very traditional, religious ceremony, but Cristiano and Irina will decide the venue."

Colin Firth Wore Eco-Friendly Clothes to 2011 Oscars

Oscar winner Colin Firth and his wife Livia both wore environmentally-friendly outfits to the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27 in a bid to raise awareness of recycled clothing. The star's partner founded Fairtrade boutique Eco Age and she donned a paneled gown recycled from old dresses for the red carpet.

She tells Britain's The Sun, "It defies what you normally see on the red carpet. It's really beautiful - it's pretty but also has a message." And Livia convinced her husband to wear an equally environmentally-friendly outfit - Firth was sporting a Tom Ford suit made of ethical materials. He adds, "Livia educated me on the
importance of knowing where the clothes you wear come from."

Firth reigned supreme at the ceremony, taking home the Best Actor trophy for his role in "The King's Speech".

Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez Wear Matching Outfits & Hold Hands at Oscar After-Party

Justin Bieber came to the Vanity Fair Oscar after-party hand-in-hand with his rumored girlfriend Selena Gomez. The two young celebrities matched their outfits with Dolce & Gabbana attires when attending the bash at Sunset Tower in West Hollywood few hours after the Academy Awards. They looked relaxed and shared laughs together.

Selena wore a sleeveless red gown with gold Lorraine Schwartz diamond jewelry, Brian Atwood shoes and Judith Leiber clutch, and Justin suited it up in a black tux with bow tie and a red pocket square. They held hands and posed together with his hand lingering on her waist. At one point, Selena was snapped closing her

distance with Justin as she whispered something to him.

Talking about Selena's fashion style, her stylist Basia wrote to Just Jared Jr., "We loved the shade of red on this stunning Dolce & Gabbana dress because it beautifully complemented Selena's skin tone. She loved the shape and felt very comfortable in it."

The other celebrities attending the party included Taylor Swift, Jon Hamm, Emma Stone, Mick Jagger, Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd.

Please don’t club me with Rahat: Adnan

Singer-composer Adnan Sami is none too pleased by attempts in the Pakistani media to club his case with that of Pakistani singer Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who was arrested in Delhi airport earlier this month for carrying undeclared foreign currency.
Attempts have been made by the Pakistani media to get in touch with Adnan and his family in Pakistan and India.
Says Adnan angrily: ‘I don’t know why the Pakistani media is bringing my name up in Rahat’s context. I am doing just fine.’
‘Yes, I’m in a spot of trouble with the government over a foreign exchange issue. But you can’t compare my problem with Rahat’s. I had done everything according to official instruction. It was the authorities who did not read the fine print,’ he adds.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was arrested at the Delhi airport Feb 13 for carrying undeclared foreign currency. He has since been released and returned to his country.
Adnan sidesteps the strong rumours that he is under renewed threat from a regional political party to leave India.
‘There will be the party-poopers in every situation. You can’t run away and hide just because some people want to get rid of you. Let me make it very clear that Mumbai is my city. This is where I now belong. And no one can drive me out,’ he said.
Reacting to rumours that he still maintains a Pakistani passport, Adnan sighs: ‘My application for an Indian passport has almost come through. I’ll soon be an Indian citizen.’
‘Until then, yes, I do hold a Pakistani passport. Does that make me a Pakistani? We’ve an example of a very important and beloved leader (Sonia Gandhi) coming from Italy,’ he adds.
‘How Italian would you consider this beloved leader who is dedicated to Indian politics? Nationality is a state of mind. I am Indian. I dare anyone to prove otherwise,’ he says.

Ke$ha's 'Blow' Music Video Ft. James Van Der Beek

Ke$ha is sharing screen with James Van Der Beek in a music video for her single "Blow". It sees the "Tik Tok" singer talking to unicorn people at a society party, "I grabbed the bear by the throat, looked him right in the eyes and said, 'Bear you have until the count of zero to put some pants on and apologize to the president.' And that's the story of how I was elected to the parliament of Uzbekistan."

The music video is directed by Chris Marrs Piliero and later follows Ke$ha in a rainbow laser-gun fight with the "Dawson's Creek" actor. They are at war of words first before pulling the guns and trying to take down each other. "Well, well, well ... if it isn't James Van Der Douche," she said. Van Der Beek quickly replied, "I don't appreciate you slander-beeking my name, Ke-dollar sign-ha."

"Blow" is an electro fist-pumping track taken from Ke$ha's 2010 extended play "Cannibal". A Cirkut remix of the song will be listed in a remix album titled "I Am the Dance Commander + I Commander You to Dance" which is coming out in the U.S. on March 22.

Avril Lavigne Fights Label Bosses for Pushing Her Rock Into 'Urban' Sound

Avril Lavigne was furious when record label executives tried to persuade her to ditch her trademark rock roots in favor of a radio-friendly "urban" sound.

The "Complicated" singer's latest album "Goodbye Lullaby" was mired in delays after RCA bosses pushed Lavigne to try out a different vibe - and she was shocked when they suggested she sing dance tracks.

She tells Digital Spy, "My record company were being a typical record company and trying to give me their version of how it should be - trying to get me to go in a different direction. I had to fight with them over and over. I was like, 'No, this is a really special record to me and this is what I'm doing.' Radio's very rhythmic and urban and dance today. I think they wanted me to do something more like that, but that's not what my vision was for this album. I was signed by L.A. Reid on Arista Records when I was 16. He understood me and believed in me. Arista folded and I got put on RCA or whatever, then there were new people there, and every six months it changes and more new people come in. It's funny when someone new comes in and they've got an opinion too."

Bella and Edward to Have Sex More Than Once in 'Breaking Dawn'

It seems that Bella and Edward are really going to give in to their passions in "The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn". Their steamy sex scene has been teased in an image but they are said to do it more than once on screen.

"Twilight" actor Jackson Rathbone lets the information slip from his mouth when asked about how sexy the love-making scene will be. "It's a PG-13 movie, but also it is what it is and it's a union. They are consummating their relationship and they don't just do it once, let's put it that way," he says.

"It's definitely sexy. It definitely qualifies as 'shmexaaay'," he adds. The depicter of vampire Jasper also assures fans that they will see lots of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's chemistries on the film, telling E! Online with laugh "Oh yeah. It sizzles, man. It sizzles like bacon!"

Pattinson and Stewart have filmed their honeymoon scene for "Breaking Dawn" in Brazil. They and other co-stars recently headed to Vancouver, Canada to continue the production. Mackenzie Foy is cast as Bella and Edward's daughter, Renesmee, and rumors say Christie Burke will play a teenage version of Renesmee.

Directed by Bill Condon, this last chapter in "Twilight" series will be split into two parts. "The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn: Part I" is set to be released on November 18, while "The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn Part II" is scheduled for November 16, 2012 U.S. release.

Taylor Swift Spotted With Chord Overstreet at Hockey Game

Taylor Swift and Chord Overstreet spark dating rumor after they were pictured watching L.A. Kings game together in Los Angeles on Thursday, February 24. The country music singer sat next to the "Glee" star when watching the Kings defeating the Minnesota Wild at Staples Center.

Taylor, 21, looked relaxed and enjoying Chord's company. At 22, the Sam Evans depicter indeed seems to be more age-appropriate for the "Speak Now" hitmaker who was previously linked to much-older hunks Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer.

About a year ago, Taylor was spotted with Chord's "Glee" co-star Cory Monteith at a bowling alley. The two also had a dinner together just earlier this month. "We're just friends. I don't know where the time is to date these days," Cory spoke of the outing. "She's lovely. I think talent is attractive."

Chord, meanwhile, was rumored to date Bruce Willis' daughter Rumer Willis, but he quickly shrugged it off. "The thing is, I have tons of friends I hang out with and if you get your picture taken with anyone, all of a sudden you're dating," he clarified in a recent interview with Vman magazine.

Nothing has been confirmed just yet, but Taylor seems to fit Chord's type. The actor, who happens to be the son of country music musician Paul Overstreet, once said of what he looks for in a girl, "[someone] who's funny, sweet, likes to laugh, and is a good girl. She needs to have somewhat of a taste for country music. And she has to be from the South. She doesn't have to be, but there's nothing like Southern food."
